The City of Burbank engaged 6th Street Consulting (6SC) to modernize its aging SharePoint 2010 infrastructure. Like many municipalities, the City relied heavily on SharePoint for document management, departmental collaboration, and internal communications. However, after more than a decade, the system had become increasingly difficult to maintain, lacked modern features, and was falling behind Microsoft’s cloud-first roadmap.

The challenge was clear: migrate over 50 individual site collections into SharePoint Online while upgrading legacy functionality and ensuring uninterrupted access for thousands of city employees.

Migrating Burbank’s SharePoint environment was all about balancing modernization with continuity. We had to be precise so city services wouldn’t miss a beat while still delivering a major technology upgrade.

– James Voss, Senior Consultant, 6SC

One of the biggest hurdles involved the City’s fragmented SharePoint architecture. Each department maintained its own site collection in different formats, which made migration to the cloud both complex and risky. Additionally, the project had to be completed without disrupting daily operations—a non-negotiable factor for essential city services.

Burbank is known as the “Media Capital of the World” and is home to Warner Bros., Disney, and countless media studios. In the 1950s, Walt Disney even pitched building Disneyland in Burbank before officials turned it down.

6SC designed a comprehensive migration strategy. The team rebuilt the intranet from the ground up in SharePoint Online, leveraging SPFx development services to modernize custom solutions. Data was reorganized to align with Microsoft 365 best practices, and a completely redesigned intranet delivered a more intuitive, mobile-friendly experience for staff.
